Multiscale electron microscopy investigation of grain boundary-mediated crack initiation in AA6451 during three-point bending

چکیده
The microstructural origins and early behavior of crack formation in AA6451 samples under three-point bending has been investigated using a multiscale electron microscopy-based approach. Two different heat treatments were investigated: solution treated naturally aged (T4) artificially (T6). Electron backscatter diffraction cross-sectional scanning microscopy imaging showed that, prior to formation, grain boundary ledges formed. These formed adjacent boundaries whose surface traces oriented parallel the bend axis their planes forming angles below 70° with sample surface. misorientation angle did not show any correlation ledge or formation. sub-surface deformation fields associated strongly affected precipitate state, refinement ultrafine occurring free zone more diffuse structures non-aged samples. In both cases, constituent particles found have significant influence on damage nucleation processes.

Boundary-mediated electron-electron interactions in quantum point contacts.
An unusual increase of the conductance with temperature is observed in clean quantum point contacts for conductances larger than 2(e2/h). At the same time, a positive magnetoresistance arises at high temperatures. A model accounting for electron-electron interactions mediated by boundaries (scattering on Friedel oscillations) qualitatively describes the observation. It is supported by a numeric...
متن کاملMultiscale behavior of crack initiation and growth in piezoelectric ceramics
The multiscale nature of cracking in ferroelectric ceramics is explored in relation to the crack growth enhancement and retardation behavior when the direction of applied electric ®eld is reversed with reference to that of poling. An a priori knowledge of the prevailing fracture behavior is invoked for the energy dissipated in exchange of the macroand micro-crack surface. To avoid the formalism...
متن کاملUsing Finite Element Software to Simulation Fracture Behavior of Three-point Bending Beam with Initial Crack
using computation software to simulate fracture behaviors of structures can shorten the time to estimate safety of engineering structures and reduce a lot of cost of experiment. However three dimensional numerical simulation for fracture process is a challenging issue, because the convergence and accuracy are not easily obtained and high computational cost is generated. In this paper, three new...
متن کاملGrain Boundary Rotations near Crack Tips in Deformed Nanomaterials
A special mechanism/mode of plastic deformation occurring through stress-driven rotations of low-angle grain boundaries (GBs) near crack tips in nanocrystalline and ultrafinegrained (UFG) materials is theoretically described. It is demonstrated that such rotations of GBs represent energetically favorable processes in wide ranges of parameters characterizing precracked specimens with nanocrystal...
متن کاملGrain rotation mediated by grain boundary dislocations in nanocrystalline platinum
Grain rotation is a well-known phenomenon during high (homologous) temperature deformation and recrystallization of polycrystalline materials. In recent years, grain rotation has also been proposed as a plasticity mechanism at low temperatures (for example, room temperature for metals), especially for nanocrystalline grains with diameter d less than ~15 nm. Here, in tensile-loaded Pt thin films...
